What you need:
different color construction paper, markers, glitter, scissors, and a stapler.
What to do:
- Cut 31 strips of construction paper (one for each day of the month). Younger kids ask a grown-up to help with the scissors.
- Using the tips from my Fire Safety Tips, write a holiday safety message on each one (they don't call me Sparky the Fire Dog for nothing).
- Decorate the strip with anything you want, markers, glitter, stickers...the sky's the limit.
- Staple the first strip into a loop and then make a chain of the strips by looping then stapling them together.
- Each day, take a link off the chain. When you take the link off read the safety message and make sure your home is fire safe. (If you start building your chain after Dec. 1st make enough links to get you to Jan. 1st). It's fun taking the links off every day, when the chain gets smaller you know you are getting close to New Year's (and it also helps you keep track of your special holiday).
Here is my family's Safety Countdown Chain. We put ours right across the doorway in the living room. |
