Cool to Do

Earth Day!Earth image
Earth Day is a yearly event that teaches people how and why the earth needs to be protected. But I think Earth Day should be celebrated everyday (not just April 22). People in towns and cities around the world participate in Earth Day in lots of different ways.

Here are just a few ways to do your planetary part (remember, start off small):

  • If you leave a room, turn off the lights.
  • Instead of throwing your cans and newspapers in the trash... Recycle them – it’s a blast, trust me.Recycling
  • Don’t be a litterbug. If you see something on the ground, pick it up. Take a look in your own backyard and around your neighborhood.
  • Why not walk, ride your bike or take the bus to where you need to go instead of being driven. (Check out some safety rules when riding the bus, walking and biking.)
  • If you live near the coast why not help clean up your beaches? There is probably a group near you that is already doing this. Have a grown-up give them a call and ask how you can help.
  • Plant a tree (in fact, why not plant two)

This Month's Cool Activity:

Flowers for Earth Day

What you need: Different color construction paper, straws, scissors, tape or glue, crayons or markers.

What to do:

  • Cut construction paper in the shape of a flower Flowers for Earth Day photo
(without the stem). Any kind of flower will do – calla lilies are my wife Dotty’s favorites.
  • Cut out a leaf to attach to the stem.
  • Write an Earth Day message (or my all time favorite...a safety message) on the leaf like buckle up; stop, drop, and roll; or recycle. Try to keep them short because there isn’t a lot of room.
  • Now decorate the flower.
  • Attach the flower and the leaf to the straw (stem)
    with tape or glue.
  • You can make a whole bouquet if you want. Ask a grown-up for a vase to put them in.
  • Give them to your friends or family for a happy (and safe) Earth Day!
